Heart of Darkness is Joseph Conrad's disturbing novella recounted by the itinerant captain Marlow sent to find and bring home the shadowy and inscrutable Captain Kurtz. Marlow and his men follow a river deep into a jungle, the "Heart of Darkness" of Africa looking for Kurtz, an unhinged leader of an isolated trading station. This highly symbolic psychological drama was the founding myth for Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 movie Apocalypse Now.

I found this book very heavy reading and somewhat meandering. For those studying 'the classic' genre I would recommend the read, but for pleasure - not so much. It is also worth looking up all the info on the author which helps explain the unusual writing style. Focus needs to be more on how the story is told rather than the story itself.

Heart of Darkness Annotated edition by Joseph Conrad Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The novel is excellent, but it can be found for free on various sites. I bought this for the annotations and don't see anything.
A short novella, but Conrad's use of words really impressed me. I came away with a number of highlighted passages and his writing style got me to read the memoir that is attached at the end of this kindle version.
To really appreciate this literary classic, you should first read the non-fiction "King Leopold's Ghost.........", to fully grasp the level of human rights abuse the Belgians inflicted on the people of the Congo.. King Leopold is representative of the damage that colonial European countries created in their exploitation of Africa, and the damage done still exists in this century. Africa has been exploited through slavery, mineral resources, and international manipulation. A must read to grasp an insight of how big a challenge Africa will continue to pose to the U.S. in the next 30 years.
Rereading this book years later I appreciated it so much more. Preceived the depth of this work and the importance for generations to come.
Read "King Leopold's Ghost" at the same time. Conrad 's representation was the real experience of the native Congo population at the turn of the 19th century. "Despicable" doesn't begin to describe it. Take a look at "Soldier Blue" and "Apocalypse Now"; two films that refer to events in history, Show horrific abuse and violence, but don't come close to how bad it really was.
Joseph Conrad's masterpiece of Kurt's soul is the endgame reality of human experience. Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot looked to Conrad as the holy grail.
Reread a great piece of literature.
